Neurofeedback Q&A

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback improves your mental health through brain training. How is that possible? By changing the electrical activity in your brain.

Electrodes can pick up the electrical activity produced by the nerves in your brain and turn it into a visual image showing your brain waves.

During neurofeedback, electrodes send the electrical activity to a computer program. The program displays your brain waves in engaging ways, such as making figures move on the monitor or playing music.

The computer shows whether your brain waves are in or out of sync. For example, blocks, colors, or figures may line up a certain way when the electrical activity is healthy and move in different directions when it’s imbalanced due to a mental health condition.

During neurofeedback, you learn to control the visual images on the monitor. As you purposefully move the images into the designated position, you retrain your brain waves, improve nerve activity, and return to a healthier mental state.

The brain wave changes become permanent, and your mental health improves as you participate in regular neurofeedback sessions.

What mental health conditions improve with neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a successful treatment for many mental health problems. Your Rubix Health provider may suggest neurofeedback to help you relax, reduce stress, and control anger.

A few examples of conditions that improve with neurofeedback include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Insomnia
  • Substance use disorder (SUD)
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Neurofeedback may also improve memory and cognitive performance and help relieve pain.

What should I expect during neurofeedback?

You wear a helmet, cap, or headband that holds the electrodes. Then, you sit in front of the computer monitor and watch the activities on the screen, listen to music, or play a game. Some neurofeedback programs are as simple as seeing the screen change color in response to your emotions.

No matter the type of activity, you control what happens on the monitor by focusing and changing your brain waves. You see (or hear) an immediate response to changes in your brain’s electrical activity, giving you real-time feedback for ongoing brain training.

You can improve your mental well-being with neurofeedback, whether alone or with psychotherapy or medication. Call the nearest office or request a neurofeedback consultation through online booking to learn how neurofeedback can help you.
